Any scenario with elements of challenge, exile, transformation, initiation, birthing, and/or dying can give you an overarching theme to reframe your story. To allow for perspective, see your story as a myth. Shift the setting to a different time and place; augment the circumstances to include a journey and a mega-theme; and give the major players powerful roles (seeker, king, warrior, sage, priest). As you concoct the storyline, don’t be surprised if a victim or drill sergeant, stoic or dilettante, fool or scoundrel show up somewhere along the way. As you build the story, ask yourself: “What needs to be left behind? What needs to be accomplished? What tools or assistance would be helpful?” Even the shortest healing journey has challenges and setbacks that, when embraced, offer rewards of power and wisdom. Like others have discovered, you may be surprised how your healing myth unfolds. And, if the overarching theme wasn’t apparent at the beginning of your story, rest assured that it will be at the end.
Explore: Your Healing Journey
Get out your Body Wisdom journal, sit down, and gather in the details of your current situation. Engage your creative imagination and change the particulars of the story to design your own mythic journey. Use one of the overarching themes, assign the parts, and let your story tell itself. Where does your journey begin: at the edge of a forest, climbing a mountain, down the rabbit hole? Who is accompanying you? Be playful. What if your cast included animals or archetypal beings? Pick a couple randomly; you might be delighted by their uncanny perfection and symbolic message. What tools are you bringing with you—vision to see beyond the fog, a sword to pierce the veil, a compass to show the way? Who do you meet along the way? What gifts are you given? Look way out in the distance—can you see a clearing in the forest, light on the horizon, or a verdant distant shore? Bring it all together and write it down in your journal. Feel free to tap into the language and lore of fable and fairy tale to embellish the story. Look for recurring themes and archetypes. If you’re inspired, illustrate it or include a poem.
Now stand back from what you’ve created. Does the myth you’ve concocted have something to tell you? Use the internet to research the symbolism of any object or living thing in your story. Isn’t it interesting how your wise body slipped in just the right elements to give you some insight? Creating a healing myth gives you a way to see forces at play behind the scenes. Perhaps this journey was meant to be.
Fay. In her healing myth, Fay had the image of an abandoned castle represent her sick body and a battle-worn warrior standing at the edge of a forest surveying the scene. From this perspective, the castle was clearly unoccupied, crumbling, and overgrown. As the warrior watched, a little girl walked out of the castle and came toward him. He
